Schools Convert to Natural Gas

Posted on June 28th, 2012.

Committee members succeeded last fall in having Southern Connecticut Gas Co. extend a natural gas main from Route 1 to McVeagh Road, which will enable the High School and Junior High to convert to natural gas from oil.

The Town received bids in March to replace the boilers at the High School and burners at the Junior High with more efficient ones that can burn either natural gas or oil. The Town’s budget was approved in May, so this equipment should be installed in time for the next heating season. Natural gas costs are considerably lower than oil and expected to remain so in coming years.
